A consistent yoga practice not only has the ability to bring perfection of mind but also of the body.

Beauty, grace, strenth and the forititute of a diamond is what can come from honoring the body in the practice of yoga.

Yet honoring the body is what might be missing in many yoga practices today.

A recent New York Times article alluded to that fact that yoga can "wreck" the body and indeed it can if it is done without awareness and intention.

Done without beauty, grace and strength the body might be forced it into postures without the conscientiousness of alignment or purpose inherent in the pose.

Seeking only an end without honoring the journey may find many practitioners with resulting injuries.

Yoga is the acceptance of who we are and where we are in this present moment, always moving towards healing and truth.

Get out of the way of the ego, move into acceptance and find the brilliance of the diamond was always there!

108 Sun Salutation Benefit for Maddie

Sunday 2/12/12

The Higgins family was presented with an extremely difficult challenge a couple of months ago when their beautiful little 5 year old daughter Maddie was diagnosed with brain cancer.

There are no words to express and no act of kindness enough to extend to them yet we must in our own way do what we can to uplift this family in their time of need in what ever small way we can!

To this end DSY will be hosting a 108 Sun Salutation Benefit for Maddie!

We will come together as a community offering intentions of light and healing to the Higgins family in their time of need.

We will also be accepting donations to help offset the cost associated illnesses such as this.

100 % of all donations will be going to the Higgins family

The class generally last from 90 minutes to 2 hours based on the different styles of Sun Salutations presented.

The idea of 108 of anything can sound daunting but when we come together as a community for a cause such as this something almost magical happens.
And of course each person is encouraged to do only as many that seems appropriate for each person's circumstance and ability.
Please join us Sunday 2/12/12 for a time of uplifting filled with the promise of hope and healing!

Resistance Band Class Starts Wednesday 2/1/12

DSY is adding Resistance Band Class to our class schedule on Wednesdays at 5:25 p.m.

The class will be done in a heated environment but is not considered a "hot" class.

The resistant bands are one of the most effective tools in a "functional training" regimen.

They are basically giant elastic rubber bands that come in varying levels of resistance.

The biggest difference between resistance bands and free weights like dumbbells is the resistance curve.

A dumbbell will feel heaviest at the beginning of the lift and easiest at the end range (think of a dumbbell curl). A resistance band on the other hand will get more difficult at the end of the range and be easiest at the beginning.

Here are the top 7 reasons why everyone should incorporate resistance band training into their fitness regimen.

  1. Using a band requires coordination and balance so you end up utilizing more stabilizer muscle groups.
  2. You can also mimic real-life sports or yoga postures by using the band to mirror the movements you'd make when kicking, peddling, lunging, squatting etc.
  3. You can target specific muscle groups or smaller muscles more easily than with weights.
  4. Bands offer more variety because you can create resistance in all directions, which helps you strengthen neglected muscle groups. Bands come in different tension levels based on the color band you use so you can easily alter the difficulty level.
  5. Resistance bands can make all body weight training exercises more challenging by anchoring the bands to a wall, a hook, under your feet, over a bar etc.
  6. Another plus: you can reconstruct many cable pulley machine exercises with resistance bands.
  7. They're compact and lightweight so you can pack them in your suitcase when you travel or stick one in your bag and take it to the gym.

This class is for anyone seeking to build strength as well as flexiblity in a functional way!
