Last month we discussed the Yamas of Yoga which are the restraints, now we will take a look at the Niyamas, the observances. The Yamas can be seen as things that we shouldn't do or learn to restrain ourselves from. The Niyamas are the do's or things we should observe. Saucha is purity, or cleanliness. This extends to the cleansing of mind, spirit and body, mental as well as physical detoxification. Samtosa, contentment. Keeping a positive mental attitude regardless of any situation, as all situations are ultimately temporary states of being. Tapah, discipline. A disciplined life looks for balance in all phases of life. Svadhyaya, self study though sacred texts as well as apprenticeships in areas of interest that moves one to their higher good. And Pranidhana, worship. This is a worship that transcends dogma. It moves to open us to the availability of a higher force. This is the energy that is seen in the life of those who respect life and do exceptionally good things because of it. By following these do's and don'ts one can learn to lead a life of peace, serenity and the self awareness that honors the inner divinity.

Summer Time Yoga Hints
Summer time and the living is easy and HOT!
Please remember to stay hydrated. And of course the best way to stay hydrated is to drink good ole plain simple water. Water can also be found in food as well, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, so stock up! Caffeine can have the opposite effect so limit the amount of your consumption.
Now on the mat if you tend to sweat a lot, a towel under your hands can really help to keep you steady. One of our DSY yoga friends uses a golf towel that is a beast at absorbing the wetness without the extra cost of your traditional "yoga" towel!
